Fostering – Temporarily fostering a cat

Our fostering process is designed to ensure a positive and beneficial experience for both cats and foster families. Through careful evaluation and open communication, we ensure that each candidate is well-intentioned and has the necessary resources in terms of housing and time to provide adequate foster care. Our goal is to create a safe and loving environment for cats until they find a permanent home.

How do you become a fosterer?
  • Fostering request: we kindly ask interested individuals to complete the form if they wish to become a temporary carer.
  • Initial discussion: we begin by getting to know each other, gathering information about occupation and daily schedule, age, home, other people the cat might come into contact with, necessary safety measures for cats, previous experience with animals, and anything else that becomes relevant during the conversation.
What do you need to know before becoming a fosterer?
  • You should be available for a period of at least 1–3 months, depending on the cat’s needs, to avoid causing stress due to frequent relocations.
  • You must live (at least during the fostering period) in Cluj-Napoca or the surrounding areas;
  • You will be required to sign a standard fostering contract, which can be reviewed in advance to address any possible questions (see contract template below).
  • We will bring the cat to their new home at a mutually agreed date and time, along with all necessary accessories, food, and/or medication, which we will provide throughout the fostering period; please note that foster families are asked to notify us 1–2 weeks in advance when supplies need to be replenished, so we can plan accordingly; we also appreciate and encourage the possibility of the foster family covering these supplies themselves, but if that’s not feasible, reimbursement can be arranged at regular intervals agreed upon together.
  • You will be added to a Facebook chat group dedicated to foster families, where you are encouraged to share photos and ask any questions or raise concerns with the group, which includes Green volunteers.
  • Please understand that it is important to keep us regularly updated on the cat’s wellbeing and to send photo and video materials that can be used in promoting the cat for adoption.

Why become a fosterer?

The fostering process offers you the opportunity to make a significant difference in the lives of homeless cats, giving them a real chance at a better life—a journey that also comes with numerous benefits for you:

  • Saving and transforming lives: as a fosterer, you will provide a safe and loving shelter for cats that have been abandoned. In this protected environment, cats can flourish and recover both emotionally and physically—and you will be the key reason behind that transformation.
  • Experience and learning: you become part of a community dedicated to animal welfare and have the chance to learn about feline behaviour and needs, gaining valuable experience in caring for them.
  • Companionship and joy: hosting a cat can bring a great deal of joy and companionship into your life. Cats offer affection and playful moments, helping to reduce stress and improve your overall wellbeing.
  • Flexibility: the role of a fosterer is temporary, giving you the flexibility to decide when and for how long you can care for a cat. This allows you to get involved according to your availability during different stages of life.
  • Community contribution: by participating in the fostering programme, you play an essential role in supporting the community’s animal protection efforts. Helping cats find permanent homes contributes to building a more empathetic and responsible society.
  • Support and resources: you will never be alone in this process. Our team will provide you with ongoing support, resources, and guidance to ensure you have everything you need to care for the cats in the best possible way. Furthermore, we commit to supplying the cat with everything it needs—your role is simply to offer love and attention.

We hope this information has inspired you to consider becoming a cat fosterer. Every act of love and care shown to a cat in need can make a significant difference in their life. If you would like to learn more or begin this rewarding experience, please do get in touch with us. Our team is ready to answer your questions and support you every step of the way.
