Did you know that adopting a cat brings many benefits?
Here are some compelling reasons to choose adopting a cat from a rescue organisation:
Save a life!
Each year, millions of cats end up on the streets or are born there, and over 80% do not survive their first year of life, despite reproducing uncontrollably 2–3 times a year. For this reason, animal welfare organisations are often overcrowded. By adopting, you not only give a cat a chance at life, but also help make space for another cat in need of help.
Rescue organisations can provide valuable information about each cat’s personality and help you find the perfect companion for your lifestyle.
Health benefits – physical and mental, with minimal effort!
Having a cat in your life can reduce anxiety and depression, increase serotonin and dopamine levels, and help you feel better overall. It can also reduce stress and boost emotional intelligence.
Cats not only improve your mood but also positively impact heart health and can lower the risk of allergies and asthma in children.
Since cats are naturally clean animals, their care is low-maintenance and doesn’t require much physical effort. They just need good quality food, a clean litter tray, interactive toys to keep you both entertained, and most importantly – unconditional love.
Financial advantage and statistically healthier cats!
Adoption is free! Moreover, cats available for adoption are usually up to date with vaccinations and deworming, and they are neutered, which translates into significant savings for you. With the money saved, you can ease your cat’s transition into your home with new beds, climbing towers, and toys to keep both of you busy and happy.
Moggie (mixed-breed) cats tend to be healthier and less prone to genetic disorders compared to certain purebred cats or their crosses.
Family wellbeing!
A cat can bring immense joy to your home, being a wonderful companion for you and your family members alike.
If you already have a cat or a dog that is friendly with cats, bringing in a new rescue cat may help reduce the loneliness of your current pet while you’re away during the day. You can ask the rescue organisation to help “cat-test” your dog, and if you already have a cat – expect an adjustment period before the two cats feel comfortable together.
Conclusion
Adopting a cat is a wonderful decision that brings joy and love into your life while saving others. If you’re still unsure, don’t hesitate to contact us for more information and support throughout the adoption process.
Together, we can make the world a better place for these furry souls who deserve a chance at happiness!
Did you know that FIV is not a death sentence?
A diagnosis of FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) may sound alarming, but it is important to understand the reality of this condition. Although some may believe that FIV is a death sentence, this is not true, and such myths can hinder the adoption of FIV-positive cats or lead to unjustified euthanasia.
What is FIV?
Similar to HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), FIV weakens the immune system of cats, increasing their susceptibility to other diseases.
As in humans, it is not the virus itself that causes death, but secondary infections that get out of control and to which the body can no longer respond effectively. Approximately 30% of cats develop neoplasms (tumours) of various types, with lymphoma being the most common. Oral diseases (stomatitis/gingivitis) occur in 40–50% of animals, followed by chronic kidney disease in about 10–20% of cases.
How is FIV diagnosed?
FIV diagnosis is simplified thanks to rapid tests, which are available in most veterinary practices and pharmacies. These tests can detect the presence of FIV antibodies in the cat’s blood, offering quick and reliable results.
The incubation period of the virus is 4–6 weeks, during which the test may return a false negative. The recommendation is to test after a quarantine period, and the cat should be at least three months old (as kittens under three months may still carry maternal antibodies).
Transmission and prevention
The virus is most commonly transmitted through deep bites during fights, not through play. Transmission via sexual contact or from mother to kitten is rare. Unneutered outdoor cats are at the highest risk due to frequent altercations during mating periods, with greater prevalence seen among males and older cats.
To limit a cat’s exposure to the virus, it should be kept exclusively indoors. If it does go outside (although we do not recommend this due to the many risks), it should be tested annually.
Reducing potential stressors (such as poor diet, frequent or sudden environmental changes, or an unhygienic litter box) lowers the risk of secondary illness. With proper care, many cats do not develop severe symptoms and can live normal lives. FIV-positive cats can enjoy a quality of life comparable to healthy cats and live just as long. Recent studies show that FIV does not shorten a cat’s lifespan if the proper precautions are followed.
The virus is feline-specific and cannot infect humans. There is currently no curative treatment for FIV, and the available vaccine is not widely accessible or proven for long-term use.
FIV-positive and negative cats can live together safely if they are neutered, kept indoors, and do not fight. Shared objects and mutual grooming are not effective transmission routes, as the virus does not survive long outside the body and requires direct blood contact to spread. However, if there is an infected cat in the home, the others should be tested for safety.
Conclusion
In conclusion, FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) is a condition that may seem concerning at first glance, but it does not have to be a barrier to a long and healthy life for cats. With proper understanding and care, FIV-positive cats can live alongside FIV-negative cats and enjoy a quality of life similar to that of uninfected cats.
It is essential to challenge myths and misinformation about FIV, to promote responsible adoption, and to provide the care needed for these cats to live full and happy lives.

RELAXED Book Dialogues
We’ll see you on Saturday, 27th April, from 4:00 PM at the bookstore in Sigma Shopping Center (Str. Republicii no. 109, Cluj-Napoca) to discuss the book Crazy About Our Crazy Cats, written by Claude Béata, published by Trei Publishing House.
We are delighted to have volunteers from the Greencats organization joining us at the event, where we will discuss the complex nature of cats, the various psychological disorders that can affect them, and what we can do to help them.
This is a book that has enriched our knowledge and warmed our hearts in equal measure: it explores the sensitivities and thoughts of our whiskered friends, highlighting the importance of recognizing signs and offering help when needed.
After the initial discussion, you will have the opportunity to ask questions or share your opinions and perspectives. We encourage active participation and look forward to generating a valuable exchange of ideas and experiences together during the event.
Can we talk about “animal madness”? I believe that cats exhibiting certain behavioral disorders have been affected by a developmental accident. Once the dysfunction is identified, it is often possible to address it, like a form of relational physiotherapy. Re-education often yields excellent results.
The event is free of charge. For further details and to confirm your attendance, please call us or send us a message.

We look back with emotion and can hardly believe that two years of Green Cats’ activity have already passed.

Cat food donation drive for Green Cats
Autumn is already here and, as you know, it’s harvest season! Everyone is preparing their food for the winter, and that’s exactly what we’d like to do at the Cat Cottage as well.
As such, on 17 September we look forward to seeing you at Vivo! Cluj Napoca, at the Solidarity Space stand, to help stock up supplies for the furry friends in our care!
Even if they’re not fans of pickles, they do love their tins – especially the meaty ones. Kibble of all kinds is also on their list of favourites, from the tiniest kittens to the grown-ups. We also gladly accept food for cats with special needs – such as those with renal conditions.
To give you an idea of their preferred brands, here are a few suggestions:
- For healthy adult cats: Royal Canin Exigent/Sterilized/Indoor/Outdoor and Carny, Animonda Vom Feinsten/Wild of Freedom/Nuevo/Brit Care;
- For tiny kittens: Royal Canin milk replacer, Royal Canin First Age/Second Age/Pediatric and Carny Kitten, Animonda Vom Feinsten Baby Pâté, Brit Kitten;
- For cats with medical conditions: various veterinary diets such as hepatic, renal, urinary, weight management/obesity from Royal Canin, Animonda, Monge, Hills.
Of course, accessories, toys, food bowls, litter, litter boxes, beds, and anything else you think might bring joy to our furry companions are more than welcome.
If you’d like to help us fill the cats’ pantry and prepare properly for winter, we’d be absolutely delighted to see you!
